On Friday, March 6th, the Utah Legislature adjourned sine die from its 2026 legislative session. We are happy to report that all anti-gun bills were successfully defeated this session. Additionally, several pro-gun bills advanced from the legislature, including Senate Bill 214 and Senate Bill 314. They are currently awaiting a signature from Governor Cox. Please stay tuned for additional updates on these bills as they are signed into law.
House Bill 214 strengthens liability protections for firearm manufacturers, sellers, and trade associations by ensuring they cannot be held liable for the criminal misuse of lawful products. Additionally, these protections are occupied by the state legislature, meaning localities are preempted from passing ordinances that may subject these businesses from abusive litigation tactics.
House Bill 314 streamlines Utah's firearm purchase process by eliminating a duplicative state-specific form that Federal Firearm Licensees (FFLs) are not required to use under federal law. SB 314 reduces unnecessary administrative burden on dealers while preserving Utah's existing background check system.
Thanks to the efforts of our supporters and the tireless work of our elected officials, Utah continues to be a state that upholds the Second Amendment and protects the rights of law-abiding gun owners.
As always, the NRA will remain vigilant in our efforts to defend the Second Amendment and protect the rights of gun owners across the country. NRA will be back in Salt Lake City for the 2027 session. We will continue to monitor legislative developments and work to ensure that our members’ voices are heard.
Please stay tuned to www.nraila.org and your email inbox for further updates on issues affecting our Second Amendment rights and hunting heritage in Utah.
