Yesterday, the Senate Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Environment Committee advanced two pro-gun bills, House Bill 214 and House Bill 314. Both proposals are now eligible for a vote on the Senate Floor.
House Bill 214 strengthens liability protections for firearm manufacturers, sellers, and trade associations by ensuring they cannot be held liable for the criminal misuse of lawful products. Additionally, these protections are occupied by the state legislature, meaning localities are preempted from passing ordinances that may subject these businesses from abusive litigation tactics.
House Bill 314 streamlines Utah's firearm purchase process by eliminating a duplicative state-specific form that Federal Firearm Licensees (FFLs) are not required to use under federal law. SB 314 reduces unnecessary administrative burden on dealers while preserving Utah's existing background check system.
