The gun-ban advocates in Maryland are at it again, trying to eat away at our Second Amendment rights. Today, March 9, the House Judiciary Committee heard House Bill 617, sponsored by the entire Montgomery County delegation, which would exempt the Montgomery County from the State's firearms preemption law. Maryland's firearm preemption law protects against localities enacting gun control measures that are more restrictive than the laws passed by the state legislature. Passage of this bill would create a patchwork of laws and would erode the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens of Montgomery County.
In addition, next Wednesday, March 14th, the House Ways and Means Committee will be considering House Bill 441, the "Assault Weapons Tax" bill. This bill would impose an additional 10% tax on the sale of many semi-automatic firearms and require dealers to file additional paperwork on the sale of these firearms, creating more bureaucratic red tape. This proposed legislation is a back-door attempt to ban all semi-automatics from sale in the State, and must be defeated.
Please contact your Delegates and respectfully urge them to oppose to HB 617 and HB 441. Contact information for your Delegates can be found using the "Write Your Representative" feature found at www.nraila.org. Please make the call today!
Finally, please continue to contact your Senator and Delegates and urge him or her to OPPOSE Senate Bill 43, Maryland's “Assault Weapon Ban of 2007.”
