Colorado: Governor Signs Red Flag Expansion as 3D Printing Ban Passes Legislature

This week, Governor Jared Polis signed Senate Bill 26-004, broadly expanding who can request an extreme risk protection order to include "institutional petitioners." This catch-all category is designed to be interpreted broadly by including anyone who is associated with a school, university, or healthcare facility. 

Additionally this week, the legislature gave final passage to House Bill 26-1144, the 3D printing ban, that will now be transmitted to the Governor's desk for consideration. Please contact Governor Polis and urge him to VETO HB 26-1144 by using the TAKE ACTION button below.

HB26-1144 attempts to prohibit the private use of 3-D printers and milling machines for manufacturing firearms and firearms parts that are already illegal or restricted under state law. This bill also prohibits the possession of digital instruction files and/or code related to firearm components by private individuals, raising First, Second and Fifth Amendment violation implications. This bill sets forth a dangerous precedent for enforcement and policing of the internet by state officials and raises concerns regarding an individual’s protection from self-incrimination.
