On Monday, Indiana lawmakers introduced four pro-Second Amendment bills that protect law-abiding gun owners, safeguard shooting ranges, and preserve fundamental firearm rights across the state. All measures have been referred to committee, making it critical that legislators hear from you. Please use the Take Action button below to contact members of the House Committee on Courts and Criminal Code, Senate Committee on Corrections and Criminal Law, and House Committee on Insurance, and urge them to SUPPORT HB 1221, SB 176, SB 177, and HB 1274.
House Committee on Courts and Criminal Code:
House Bill 1221 ensures that antique firearms, including black powder handguns, are treated consistently with federal law by exempting them from the background check requirements that apply to modern firearms.
Senate Committee on Corrections and Criminal Law:
Senate Bill 176 strengthens protections for shooting ranges by prohibiting counties, cities, and towns from imposing zoning, land-use, or permitting requirements that are more restrictive than state law. This measure helps prevent local governments from regulating shooting ranges out of existence and recognizes their essential role in firearm safety training, hunter education, and responsible gun ownership.
Senate Bill 177 ensures that a person may not waive certain requirements concerning the return of a firearm to its rightful owner as part of a plea agreement. Any purported waiver in a plea agreement is invalid and unenforceable as against public policy.
House Committee on Insurance:
House Bill 1274 protects businesses and gun owners from insurance mandates by prohibiting insurers from requiring policyholders to post or display a gun-free zone notice and from penalizing them for failing or refusing to do so.
NRA-ILA will continue to monitor these bills and fight for the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Indiana gun owners.
