NRA Files Amicus Brief Urging Indiana Supreme Court to Protect Associational Standing

The National Rifle Association joined a coalition of 23 nonprofit organizations, led by the ACLU of Indiana, in filing an amicus brief urging the Indiana Supreme Court to recognize the doctrine of associational standing. The case, Citizens Action Coalition of Indiana v. Duke Energy Indiana, LLC, asks whether membership organizations may bring lawsuits on behalf of their members when those members have suffered injuries related to the organization’s mission.

The brief explains that associational standing has long been recognized by the U.S. Supreme Court and is fully consistent with Indiana law. It argues that eliminating the doctrine would make Indiana an outlier and would improperly restrict access to the courts by preventing organizations from vindicating the rights of their members.

The NRA frequently relies on associational standing to defend the constitutional rights of its members, including in Second Amendment cases. As the brief explains, associational standing ensures that organizations can effectively represent their members, protect individuals from retaliation, and provide courts with the benefit of subject-matter expertise when resolving important legal questions.
