New York: Senate Committee to Hear Gun Control Bills Next Week

The Senate Codes Committee has a couple of gun bills on their agenda for Monday, March 10. The most egregious is S.1455, a so-called “smart” gun bill.  Often referred to as "personalized" or "smart guns", these firearms utilize biometrics to limit operation to specific users. Proponents of this type of legislation fail to take into account that relying on unproven electronic barriers during split second self-defense situations could be catastrophic. Additionally, S.1455, calls on the Division of Criminal Justice Services to certify the technologically as viable and create a roster, laying the groundwork for future bans on traditional handguns.

Contact your Senator using the “Take Action” button below to request a “No” vote.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the only bad idea on tap next week. S.1289 creates a gun violence advisory council.  While this bill may sound innocuous it is anything but harmless. The council is loaded with cherry-picked selections from gun grabbers, however, there is not a single representative from the firearms community.  The bill goes so far as to include the language “unintentional injury” and “attempted crimes” under “gun violence.”  Arguably, even police officers using justified deadly force could be counted under the definition. Ultimately, this is about anti-gun groups using taxpayer dollars to cook statistics that support their positions.

These bills have nothing to do with public safety.  New York already has some of the toughest gun laws in the country, and anti-gun politicians in Albany are scraping the bottom of the barrel trying to find things to do at a time when crime has been rampant in New York.
