Nevada Adds Two States to List of Recognized Right-to-Carry Permits

On July 1, 2011, Arizona and Kentucky will be added to the list of states from which Nevada will recognize concealed carry weapons permits (CCW), bringing the new total to fifteen states.  In a meeting on May 5, the Nevada Sheriffs' and Chiefs' Association (NSCA) voted to add the two states and also determined that no states would be dropped from the approved list.  This move hopefully signals that the NSCA is comfortable with allowing more law-abiding non-residents to carry in Nevada.

Arizona and Kentucky join Alaska, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island, Tennessee and West Virginia as states whose CCW permits are recognized in Nevada.

The Nevada Department of Public Safety (DPS) is tasked with annually reviewing the CCW issuance policies of each state to determine whether or not their statutes are similar or more stringent than Nevada's and whether or not the state has an electronic database which is accessible 24 hours a day that identifies each permit holder.   

The results of the audit are reported to the membership of the Nevada Sheriffs' and Chiefs' and they vote on the recommendations from DPS.  The list of qualifying states will be posted on the Nevada Department of Public Safety’s website, www.dps.nv.gov by July 1.
