NRA-Backed Bills Progressing Through the Nevada Legislature

Senate Bill 231, the Nevada Campus Protection Act, has been referred to the Senate Committee on Finance.  The NRA is working to get the current fiscal note removed so this bill can advance to the Senate floor.  Introduced by state Senator John Lee (D-1), SB 231 would allow individuals who hold a Concealed Carry Weapons (CCW) permit to carry their firearm on the property of the Nevada System of Higher Education without first gaining permission from the university president, which is currently mandated by statute.  It has been a long-held policy within the campus administration to not allow permit holders to carry, which has created an environment where students, faculty and staff are left defenseless in “gun-free” zones.

Assembly Bill 217, introduced by Assemblyman John Ellison (R-33), passed unanimously in the state Senate and is now headed back to the Assembly for enrollment, before being sent to Governor Brian Sandoval for his approval. 

AB 217 would allow residents of non-contiguous states to purchase long guns in Nevada.  In addition, it would also allow Nevada residents to purchase long guns in non-contiguous states.  If enacted, this legislation would bring Nevada in line with the protections provided by the Firearms Owners Protection Act of 1986, which allows the interstate sale of long guns by federally licensed firearms dealers.
