As he returned from Cumbria on Friday, David Cameron, the prime minister, acknowledged public concern over firearms following the shootings by Derrick Bird last week. In an interview with The Sunday Times, Cameron said: "People will ask a lot of questions about gun control, mental health, criminal records, number of weapons. All completely appropriate questions that must be answered." He added, however: "Generally we do have very strong gun control. I don't think we should leap to conclusions.
