Important Gun Bills on the Move in the Indiana Senate!

Thursday, February 11, 2010

Please Contact Your State Senator!

On Tuesday, February 9, the State Senate Committee on Corrections, Criminal and Civil Matters passed House Bill 1065 and House Bill 1068.  Both bills now head to the Senate floor for second reading as early as Monday, February 15!

HB1065, authored by State Representative Bob Bischoff (D-68) and sponsored by State Senator Johnny Nugent (R-43) and State Senator Brent Steele (R-44), would prevent state or local government authorities from confiscating lawfully owned firearms during declared states of emergency, such as occurred in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. Moreover, this bill would also prohibit employers from firing employees who safely and lawfully store their firearms in their privately-owned locked vehicles while on an employer’s property.

HB1068, sponsored by State Representative Peggy Welch (D-60) and sponsored by State Senator Greg Walker (R-41), would limit access to the Indiana Right-to-Carry permit list in order to protect the privacy of law-abiding citizens.  If passed, this legislation would make Right-to-Carry permit information confidential and would prohibit the publication of that information.

Big businesses are trying to water-down HB 1065 by creating large loopholes allowing businesses to exempt themselves from the Parking Lot legislation.

Hoosier employees deserve better! Please let your Senator know you want a strong Parking Lot bill, and to pass a bill free of big business loopholes.

Please contact your State Senator TODAY and politely encourage them to support HB 1065 and HB 1068.   Your State Senator’s contact information can be found here.
