Jeane Kirkpatrick, who died Dec. 8 at 80, was that rare thing-a public intellectual and a public figure. She excelled at both. She was born in Duncan, Oklahoma, in 1926. She was an ideologue, and her ideas would have come from Duncan. Their tenet was freedom for the human spirit. She dedicated a public life to protecting that freedom.
