Melvin Gearhart had parked his 18-wheeler on a West Oakland,
Calif., street for a delivery when a man began pounding on the
window. Thinking he was there to unload the truck, Gearhart's wife
rolled down her window. The stranger attacked her and tried to get
inside. She quickly rolled up the window, trapping her assailant's
arm, and Gearhart drove off to find help--the man still hanging on
the side of the rig. The trucker found a convenience store and
urged witnesses to call the police. Meanwhile, the attacker had
freed himself. He knocked Gearhart down and began attacking his
wife. The trucker was then able to grab a handgun from the cab,
fire and kill the assailant. The district attorney's office later
ruled that Gearhart was justified in killing the attacker.
