A duo of knife-wielding escapees took warden Ross Maggio and
his mother hostage at their home on the prison grounds near Angola,
La. A blade at his throat and his mother on the floorboards, he was
forced to drive the convicts to freedom. But at the main gate,
Maggio crashed into an iron post, leapt from the truck and grabbed a
revolver from an officer. With another guard he opened fire,
killing one inmate and injuring the other.
