"Be cool, man," a burglar commanded Alan Pearson when the St. Louis, Mo., homeowner found the housebreaker in his den. But Pearson ran for his .45 automatic instead, and when the criminal pointed a 12-ga. shotgun at him, opened fire, hitting the crook in the leg.
