Victory for Gun Rights in Nevada

Fairfax, Va. – Today, Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval signed into law National Rifle Association (NRA) backed legislation that dramatically improves Nevada's gun laws by ensuring consistency across the state. This historic legislation ends the antiquated "blue card" system in Clark County, expands recognition of out-of-state permits, improves self-defense laws by expanding the Castle Doctrine to vehicles and provides civil liability protection when justified force is used.

"The signing of Senate Bill 175 is a victory for Nevada's law-abiding gun owners," said Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action. "The law is now squarely on the side of victims instead of criminals. Nevada's new law protects the constitutional rights of Nevadans and strengthens their ability to protect their families from harm."

"On behalf of the NRA's five million members, I want to thank Governor Sandoval and the many senators and assembly members who supported this bill," added Cox. "In standing up for the rights of law-abiding Nevadans, they handed yet another defeat to the Obama-Bloomberg gun control agenda."

The new law will:

  • Strengthen the state's firearms preemption statutes, ensuring consistency in gun laws throughout the Silver State;
  • Abolish the antiquated "blue card" system, which required handgun registration in Clark County;
  • Expand the list of out of state permits that will be recognized in Nevada;
  • Improve self-defense laws by extending the Castle Doctrine to include a person’s vehicle; and
  • Provide greater protections from civil lawsuits to those who use deadly force against certain violent criminals – creating a "rebuttable presumption" that assumes a person acted justifiably in their use of deadly force if certain factors are present.

Established in 1871, the National Rifle Association is America's oldest civil rights and sportsmen's group. More than five million members strong, NRA continues to uphold the Second Amendment and advocates enforcement of existing laws against violent offenders to reduce crime. The Association remains the nation's leader in firearm education and training for law-abiding gun owners, law enforcement and the armed services.
