Iowa: Bill to Legalize Suppressors Receives New Number, Scheduled for House Floor Vote Tomorrow

Wednesday, February 26, 2014

Tomorrow, House File 2381 is scheduled to be considered by the Iowa House of Representatives.  This action follows passage last week of HF 2381 in the House Judiciary Committee by a strong, bipartisan 17-4 vote.  HF 2381, authored by state Representative Matt Windschitl (R-17), is formerly known as HF 384 and would legalize the ownership of firearm sound suppressors, also referred to as "silencers” in Iowa.

Currently illegal to own under Iowa law, suppressors are legal to own under federal law and in 39 states.  While they do not eliminate the sound of a firearm, suppressors do reduce the muzzle report of the gun much in the same way that a muffler reduces exhaust noise from a car or truck.

There are numerous benefits associated with the use of suppressors.  These benefits include increased accuracy due to reduced recoil and muzzle blast, protection from hearing damage and reduced noise pollution.  Noise complaints are frequently used as an excuse to close shooting ranges, informal shooting areas and hunting lands throughout the country.  Increased use of suppressors will help to eliminate many of these complaints and protect hunting and shooting areas well into the future.

HF 2381 will be considered and voted on tomorrow in the state House of Representatives.  Please contact your state Representative TODAY and encourage him or her to SUPPORT House File 2381.  To find your state Representative, click here.  To reach your state Representative by phone, call the House switchboard at (515) 281-3221.  In addition, you may watch the state House floor proceedings live here.
