A family was travelling down I-95 in Colleton County, S.C. in two separate vehicles, when trouble with a trailer attached to one of the vehicles forced them to pull over. One of the family members, a soldier recently back from Afghanistan, attempted to fix the problem while his wife and mother in law stood by one of the cars. While the repairs were taking place, a car carrying three men arrived on the scene. One of the men, David Jakes, exited the car carrying a handgun and started threatening the two women. The soldier, who is also a Right-to-Carry permit holder, drew a gun and fired at Jakes, striking him twice. With the help of his accomplices, Jakes fled back to the car and was taken to a local hospital. Police captured Jakes at the hospital and charged him with armed robbery and assault with intent to kill.
