This week, South Carolina legislature adjourned for 2026 after completing their regular legislative calendar and being immediately called into special session. Before adjournment came the ratification of H.3872 - The Hunting Heritage Protection Act. This bill, which passed unanimously out of both chambers, directs the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources to avoid reduction of department managed hunting & fishing land by adopting policies to ensure there is no net loss in public acreage. Further, it requires DNR to submit a report each year citing the acreage closed to hunting during the previous year as well as the acreage opened to hunting to compensate for those closures.
Upon receipt, Governor McMaster signed H.3872 on May 15th, and it will take effect July 1st 2027.
Preservation of hunting land is of utmost importance to the NRA and it commends the South Carolina legislature & Governor McMaster for their dedication to ensuring outdoor opportunities in the Palmetto State for generations to come.
Your NRA will be back in Columbia for the 2027 session. Please stay tuned to the NRA-ILA website and your inbox for further updates on issues impacting your Second Amendment rights and hunting heritage.
