Maryland: Three Major Anti-Gun Bills Up in Committee Tomorrow, March 11!

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

On Thursday, March 11 at 1 pm, both the Maryland House Judiciary Committee and Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee will be holding hearings on numerous firearm-related bills.

The following anti-gun bills will be heard in the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee. It is important to contact the members of the Committee listed below and respectfully urge them to OPPOSE these bills.

Senate Bill 167, sponsored by Senator Mike Lennett (D-19), would create unnecessary hurdles in an attempt to dissuade people from filing for a state-regulated firearms dealer’s license.  SB 167 would allow the Secretary of State Police to disapprove the license application if it is determined that someone whose license was previously suspended or revoked is involved.  It would also duplicates recordkeeping and other requirements that have been in place at the federal level since 1968.

Several provisions of SB 167 mirror federal law and are already illegal. Where it does not mirror federal law it imposes restrictions greater than those already in place.

Senate Bill 645, sponsored by Senator Brian Frosh (D-16), would require Marylanders to apply for and obtain a “Handgun Permit to Purchase” before obtaining a handgun in Maryland.  Click here for more information on this bill.

If passed, SB 645 would make an already cumbersome purchasing process even more complicated and subject to abuse by anti-gun bureaucrats who already think there are too many gun owners in Maryland.

The following bill will be heard in the House Judiciary Committee.  It is important to contact the members of the Committee listed below and respectfully urge them to OPPOSE House Bill 820.

House Bill 820, sponsored by Delegate Rosenberg (D-41), would require Marylanders to apply for and obtain a “Handgun Permit to Purchase” before obtaining a handgun in Maryland. HB 820 is the companion bill of SB 645.
