It must be remembered that Atlanta is Georgia's largest city and commercial hub. The city therefore carries a lot of influence with the General Assembly and its policies. Atlanta has lobbied against your right to bear arms in the past, when HB 89, decriminalizing the carry of weapons on MARTA was being debated. Atlanta was more successful in a fight in court over the right to bear arms in the Atlanta airport, something that is legal in 40 states. Atlanta also fought the repeal of its gun ban on firearms in city parks, even though the ban was plainly illegal under state law. Unfortunately, the election of Kasim Reed probably indicates that Atlanta will continue steering the same course in the future.
