Moroccan immigrant Mustapha Kassou was tending to his store, the Golden Food Market, in Richmond, Va., when James Groom entered the store armed with a gun. Groom ordered everyone in the store to get on the floor and fired at Kassou striking him twice. Kassou later said, “When the guy shot me, I was waiting for him to finish me.” After the gunfire, one of the store’s customers drew his revolver, aimed it at Groom and ordered him to drop his gun. When Groom did not comply, the armed customer fired, striking him in the torso. The customer then recovered Groom’s gun and notified the police of the incident. When the police arrived, Kassou and Grooms were taken to a local hospital. Kassou was released the next day, while Grooms remains in critical condition. When speaking with the media, Kassou praised the actions of his armed customer, stating “He saved a lot of lives… He was like an angel who came to save everybody.” The police agreed, noting that their initial investigation indicated that the customer acted within his rights. While not sure if he will reopen his store, Kassou said that if he does he will arm himself.
