On Thursday, March 6, the State House voted in favor of the State Senate’s amendments to House Bill 137, introduced by State Representative Lorraine Quarberg (R-28), by a 57 to 2 vote. While the bill was stripped of its “no duty to retreat in a public place” provision, the amendments did keep the “no duty to retreat inside one's home”, as well as provide that individuals whose homes are unlawfully entered into cannot be held civilly liable if they use deadly force to defend their home, self or family.
We will continue to pursue the full definition of Castle Doctrine in the future. At the same time, this effort has been a huge success to this point, and we want to thank all of the NRA members and pro-gun supporters who were so instrumental in moving this bill forward with their emails and phone calls. We would also like to thank State Representative Quarberg and State Senator Kit Jennings (R-28), who stood up for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms in the face of staunch opposition.
HB137 now heads to Governor Dave Freudenthal (D) for his consideration. Please contact Governor Freudenthal and respectfully urge him to sign HB137 into law. You can send comments to Governor Freudenthal by clicking here, or you can call him at (307) 777-7434.
