Starving, dying elk near Mount St. Helens got a lot of attention at the end of last winter and for good reason. Seeing a once-magnificent animal stumbling around and slowly dying is a heart-wrenching sight. The state Department of Fish and Wildlife has a new management plan to reduce the size of the Mount St. Helens elk herd to prevent starvation and disease. The plan, which calls for increased hunting of cow elk, will probably anger some people, especially the anti-hunting zealots at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
