HELP STOP NJ RANGE CLOSING!

Wednesday, April 27, 2005

Please immediately email, fax, or call the Union County Freeholders and urge them NOT to close the Lenape Park Trap & Skeet Range on May 1. Please also come to the Freeholders` meeting on Thursday, April 28 (tomorrow) and make your voice heard! It is important that the Freeholders receive your email, fax, or phone call before this meeting.

Lenape Park Trap & Skeet Range is a public facility owned and operated by Union County, New Jersey since 1927. The Country Freeholders have been trying to close this range since the autumn of 2004, allegedly under pressure from environmental regulators to implement a lead management plan. After an outpouring of support from gun owners in November, the Freeholders voted to keep the range open but instead banned the use of lead ammunition and criminalized its possession.

Now the Freeholders have suddenly and without warning or public comment posted a notice that they intend to shut down the range on May 1, citing a drop in range use over one of the worst winters in NJ`s history, increased costs of enforcing its unconstitutional lead ban, and costs of obtaining a special permit from NJ DEP. Environmental regulators have not required that the range be closed - it is the Freeholders who are unilaterally trying to close the range.

Please attend the Freeholders` meeting and make your voice heard. The meeting is at 7:00 pm on Thursday, April 28 (tomorrow) at the Union County Administrative Building, 10 Elizabethtown Plaza, Elizabeth, NJ 07207, 6th floor (for directions, go to http://ucnj.org/direct/DIRECT.HTM).
