In the end, a Marin County lawmaker retreated last week and there were no political casualties. But the fight over a bill by Assemblyman Joe Nation, D-San Rafael, to ban hunting of western mourning doves and white-winged doves exposed Democratic fissures. Assemblyman Joe Canciamilla, D-Pittsburg, said the plan "alienates a lot of people who are otherwise sympathetic to Democratic issues by marginalizing us as a party that`s anti-gun and anti-sportsman."
