Virginia House Advances Self-Defense Bill

On February 4, by a vote of 51-48, the Virginia House of Delegates passed House Bill 1997. This bill would allow trained, law-abiding Right to Carry permit holders to carry their legally concealed firearm in some restaurants that may serve alcohol. Right to Carry permit holders have demonstrated that they are among the most responsible and law-abiding citizens in the nation. They have undergone a criminal background check and satisfied a gun safety course requirement in order to obtain their permits. No doubt, those who flaunt the law and wish harm upon lawful citizens are never deterred by placebo restrictions on carrying firearms. The right of lawful permit holders to defend themselves and their families should not end simply because they enter a restaurant that may serve alcohol. Passage of House Bill 1997 is a step toward ensuring this won’t be the case.
