Walking to his Greenwich Village, N.Y., apartment shortly
after midnight, private detective David Barrett was accosted by a
"wall of robbers," as many as seven. The gang attacked from both
sides and, as he fell to the ground, Barrett drew his licensed
revolver and shot two of the assailants. The remainder fled, but
police later arrested three suspects.
