At first, Cathie Jaworski went along with the knife-wielding man who demanded money from the cash register of her family's Lake Elsinore, Calif., liquor store. But when he ordered her to lie on the floor and took a few swipes at her with the knife, she grabbed a pistol and shot him. The man fled, but deputies arrested a suspect a half-mile away.
