J.W. Thomas, 82, emerged from his sickroom with a 12-ga. shotgun after he heard screaming inside his Shelby, Miss., home. He found a prison escapee beating 75-year-old Frank Woods with a hammer. When the criminal turned to attack him, Thomas responded with a blast that killed the prisoner, who was serving 40 years for armed robbery.
