Grassroots Alert: Vol. 15, No. 37 9/12/2008

Act NOW To Restore

Second Amendment Rights Of D.C. Residents!

In a strong bipartisan effort, House Democrats and Republicans recently joined forces to introduce H.R. 6691, the “Second Amendment Enforcement Act.”  This critical NRA-backed legislation would overturn Washington, D.C.’s newly enacted “emergency gun control laws,” which continue to defy the U.S. Supreme Court’s unambiguous decision in District of Columbia v. Heller by continuing to restrict D.C. residents’ right to self-defense.

On June 26, the U. S. Supreme Court held in District of Columbia v. Heller that “the District’s ban on handgun possession in the home violates the Second Amendment, as does its prohibition against rendering any lawful firearm in the home operable for the purpose of immediate self-defense.”

HAWAII:  Hawaii Primary Elections, Saturday, September 20!Saturday, September 20 is Primary Election Day in Hawaii.  Please be sure to vote Freedom First.  For candidate ratings and endorsements, please call the NRA-ILA Grassroots Division at (800) 392-VOTE (8683) or visit www.NRAPVF.org.  For more information about voting in Hawaii, please click here.

KENTUCKY:  Management Plan Being Written for Clarks River National Wildlife Refuge.  The Fish and Wildlife Service has announced that it will begin writing a 15-year plan for the management of Clarks River National Wildlife Refuge.  The Refuge is about 8,500 acres with an approved acquisition boundary of approximately 18,000 acres that extends along the East Fork of the Clarks River from just south of Benton, northwest to within five miles of Paducah.  The federal agency is inviting the public to submit comments on how they want to see the Refuge managed in the future.  Because hunting is allowed, it is important that hunters get involved in the planning process to ensure that hunting is protected and enhanced in future years.  You may submit your comments to Tina Chouinard, Natural Resource Planner, at [email protected].  For further information, you may call 731-780-8208.  The deadline for comments is October 14th.

NEW JERSEY: Wall Township Abandons Anti-Gun Proposal!  On Wednesday, September 10, the Wall Township Committee abandoned their proposal to prohibit the carrying of any loaded weapons or nocked arrows within a 650-foot buffer zone from buildings. This ordinance would have gone above and beyond the state mandated 450-foot buffer zone and would have set the precedent for further hunting and sporting regulations. Thank you to all of the NRA members who answered the call to action.  Without you, this victory would not have been possible.

TENNESSEE:  Williamson County Commission Pulls Anti-Gun Resolution from Agenda!  On Monday, September 8, the Williamson County Commission pulled Resolution No. 9-08-31 from the Commission’s agenda.  This resolution would have imposed new restrictions on law-abiding citizens’ Right-to-Carry in Williamson County by establishing a policy prohibiting guns in all buildings owned and controlled by Williamson County and to direct signs providing notice be posted at the entrance ways of each building.  We would like to extend a special thanks to Ralph Bacue, NRA Life Member, who spoke out on behalf of our Second Amendment freedoms.  We would like to thank all of the NRA members who attended Monday night’s Commission meeting, as well as those who spoke out in opposition to Resolution No. 9-08-31.  Without you, this victory would not have been possible.  We would also like to thank the County Commissioners for recognizing the Second Amendment rights of Williamson County’s law-abiding citizens.
