SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON HR 2640

In last week’s Grassroots Alert, we provided factual information to refute several myths being promulgated by some vocal opponents of the NICS Improvement bill.

The success of the pro-gun community and the preservation of our Second Amendment rights rely heavily upon a well-informed membership.  In our on-going effort to set the record straight and provide you with the most up-to-date information to help address the confusion and blatant misrepresentations over H.R. 2640¾the “NICS Improvement Amendments Act”¾below are some links to our NRA-ILA fact sheets and recent articles written to further clarify this important legislation.

STATE ROUNDUP  (please click to see any updates on states not listed below.)

CALIFORNIA:  Please Contact Governor Schwarzenegger Today!  Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) is currently considering three important pieces of firearm-related legislation.  Assembly Bill 1471 mandates that the manufacture, sale, and transfer of handguns that do not imprint their identifying information on a cartridge case upon firing would be a crime.  Assembly Bill 821 would ban the use of lead ammunition for hunting in various hunting zones around the state that contain California condors.  Also on the governor’s desk is Assembly Bill 1645 which will protect law-abiding gun owners during a declared state of emergency from the seizure or confiscation of any lawfully carried or possessed firearm or ammunition.  Please contact the governor and respectfully urge him to veto AB1471 and AB821.  Also remind him to protect your Second Amendment rights during a state of emergency by signing AB1645.  Governor Schwarzenegger can be reached by phone at (916) 445-2841, fax at (916) 445-4633, or visit http://gov.ca.gov/interact#email to send him an email.

City of Long Beach Planning Ammo Registration Scheme!  The City Council of Long Beach is in the preliminary stages of crafting an ordinance requiring that all ammunition sales be logged and electronically sent to law enforcement.  Also, it is likely that the ordinance will include provisions forcing purchasers of ammunition to provide identification and submit to fingerprinting, something repealed at the federal level by the 1986 Firearms Owners’ Protection Act because it was ineffective in combating crime.
Please contact Mayor Bob Foster and the Long Beach City Council today and respectfully urge them to oppose this unwarranted and unnecessary privacy-invading, anti-gun measure.  Contact information can be found by clicking here.

LOUISIANA:  Saturday, October 20, is Primary Election Day!  Please be sure to go to the polls.  Early voting has already begun, and ends Saturday, October 13.  For primary election information on candidate ratings and endorsements, please visit www.nrapvf.org or please call the NRA-ILA Grassroots Division at (800) 392-VOTE (8683).  For more information about voting in Louisiana, please visit http://www.sos.louisiana.gov/.  Remember to Vote Freedom First on Saturday, October 20!

MICHIGAN:  Important Pro-Gun Bill to be Heard Soon!  House Bill 4490, sponsored by State Representative Paul Opsommer (R-93) seeks to repeal the required “safety inspection” for newly obtained handguns, as well as requiring law enforcement agencies to destroy safety inspection records on file.  It is expected that HB4490 will be heard before the House Committee on Tourism, Outdoor Recreation, and Natural Resources soon.  Please contact the members of the Committee and respectfully urge them to support passage of HB4490.  Contact information for the Committee can be found by clicking here.

MISSOURI:  Kansas City Mayor Falls into Bloomberg’s Anti-Freedom Web!  In a recent newsletter, Kansas City Mayor Mark Funkhouser signaled his intentions to join New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” anti-gun crusade.    Mayor Funkhouser has fallen victim to the same lies and rhetoric as other mayors in America and is denouncing the Shelby-Tiahrt Amendment, crucial legislation supported by well-respected law enforcement groups and agencies such as the National Fraternal Order of Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the U.S. Department of Justice.  Please contact Mayor Funkhouser and encourage him to put sound policy ahead of politics and reconsider his decision to join Mayor Bloomberg’s ill-advised coalition. Please click here for information on how to contact the Mayor.

NEW JERSEY:  New Jersey Sportsmen Stand Up Against Extremists!  Almost 500 sportsmen protested the assault on their hunting and fishing heritage in Mullica, NJ on Tuesday, October 9.  Rallying against A3275, proposed legislation that would dissolve sportsmen’s representation on the Fish & Game Council, sportsmen sent a clear message to the New Jersey legislature that hunters and fishermen will not stand idle and watch their outdoor traditions be shamefully cast aside.  NRA is keeping a close eye on A3275 and will report once any news becomes available.

PENNSYLVANIA:  Third Hearing Scheduled for Discharge Ordinance in the Township of Upper Pottsgrove!  The Board of Commissioners for the Township of Upper Pottsgrove has scheduled a third round of discussions for a proposed firearms discharge ordinance.  The ordinance would prohibit a person from discharging a firearm within five hundred feet of any dwelling and any other area that Commissioners deem inappropriate.  Please attend the public meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 15 in the Council Chambers located at 1409 Farmington Ave., Pottstown, PA.  If you are unable to attend, please contact the Board at (610) 323-8675 to respectfully urge them to withdraw their anti-freedom proposal.
