On February 12th, the Georgia Senate introduced Senate Bill 499, sponsored by Senator Russ Ginn, and referred it to the Senate Judiciary Committee. On February 18th, House Bill 1324, the companion measure sponsored by Representative Jason Ridley, was introduced in the Georgia House and referred to the House Judiciary Non-Civil Committee.
SB 499 and HB 1324 would remove firearm suppressors from the list of dangerous weapons and eliminate state level penalties for mere possession. Suppressors would remain subject to strict federal regulation under the National Firearms Act.
Importantly, enhanced criminal penalties for the unlawful use of a firearm equipped with a suppressor during the commission of certain crimes would remain unchanged.
NRA-ILA will continue to monitor this legislation and keep Georgia gun owners informed of further developments affecting their Second Amendment rights.
