Oregon: Gun Control Scheduled for Day One of Session!

On Monday, February 2nd, the Oregon Legislature will convene for the 2026 session, and gun control is already queued up for the first day of session.

On Monday afternoon, the House Committee on Judiciary will hold a public hearing on House Bill 4145, another attempt by the legislature to override the will of the voters on Ballot Measure 114 (2022). Please contact members of the committee by using the TAKE ACTION button below and urge them to OPPOSE HB 4145!

HB 4145 would legislatively implement the ballot measure with the following major changes that were NOT approved by the voters:

1. Doubles the amount of time for state bureaucrats to issue the required permit to lawfully purchase a firearm from 30 days to 60 days.
2. Increases the cost for the permit by more than 130%, from $65 to $150, a clear attempt to make lawful gun ownership unobtainable through financial barriers.
3. Carves out on and off duty law enforcement from the permit requirement and magazine capacity limitations.
4. Pushes the permit requirement date to January 2028, showing the state isn’t even remotely prepared to take on a permitting scheme.

Ballot Measure 114 has been held by the courts since it was barely passed by voters with just 50.1% majority in 2022. NRA's legal challenge, Eyre v. Rosenblum, is ongoing in the United States 9th District Court. Other legal challenges are also ongoing. 

HB 4145 overrides the will of the voters and allows the legislature to impose more draconian gun control on law-abiding gun owners in Oregon.
