On Monday, September 15th, the Minnesota Senate will hold a special working group on "gun violence prevention." The meeting will be held at 9am in room 1200 of the Senate Office Building.
Please contact members of the committee and urge them to OPPOSE all gun control proposals by using the TAKE ACTION button below.
As of today, the working group is set to discuss the following gun control proposals:
- An "assault weapon ban" on commonly owned semi-automatic firearms;
- A ban on privately made firearms;
- A ban on common aftermarket firearm parts and accessories;
- Repealing statewide firearm preemption to allow localities to create a patchwork of gun control ordinances;
- Establishing a statewide firearm registry and mandating training prior to purchasing or possessing a firearm;
- Creating an Office of Gun Violence Prevention under the state Department of Health;
- Providing funding for the creation of a "Violence Prevention Project.” This broad language could result in the use of taxpayers' dollars to advocate for and/or provide grant monies for anti-gun groups and their priorities;
What is noticeably absent from the agenda is a discussion on mental health or policies to address the soaring crime epidemic.
Governor Tim Walz has recently called for a special session on a broad package of gun-control measures, including magazine capacity limits and a so-called "assault weapon ban." This meeting is likely a precursor to that special session being scheduled.
