New Mexico: House Committee Advances Two More Gun Control Bills, Schedules Two More for Hearings on Wednesday

On Monday, the House Judiciary Committee advanced House Bill 27 and House Bill 129 on party-line votes.  These two gun control measures now move to the full House for consideration:

House Bill 27 by Rep. Joy Garratt (D-Albuquerque)

Expands Red Flag Law

Expands categories of individuals who can be reporting parties for extreme risk protective orders to include law enforcement and licensed health care professionals, requires immediate surrender of firearms to law enforcement upon service of a red flag order, and provides for search warrants to seize firearms from persons under red flag orders. This law tramples on civil liberties and lacks due process; it should be repealed, not expanded!

House Bill 129 by Rep. Andrea Romero (D-Santa Fe)

State Waiting Period

Imposes a 14-day waiting period on firearms purchases by law-abiding citizens, including anyone who passes a background check. This would make for the longest firearm purchase delay in the country.

Please contact your State Representatvies and urge them to OPPOSE House Bill 27 and House Bill 129.

On Wednesday, January 31, the House Judiciary Committee will hold public hearings on two more anti-gun bills, House Bill 127 and House Bill 137, at 1:30pm in Room 309 of the State Capitol in Santa Fe. These are among the most extreme gun control measures being considered in the entire nation.  If you have not made a trip to the Roundhouse to fight for your rights, now is the time!

House Bill 127 by Rep. Reena Szczepanski (D-Santa Fe)

Raise the Age

Bans anyone under the age of 21 from purchasing or possessing any semi-automatic firearm, or any standard capacity magazine capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition, with limited exceptions.  Also criminalizes the sale or transfer of ownership of these firearms or magazines to anyone under 21. Law-abiding young adults who currently own these firearms and magazines could become criminals overnight.

House Bill 137 by Rep. Andrea Romero (D-Santa Fe)

Governor's Gun & Magazine Ban

Outlaws the manufacture, sale, transfer and possession of nearly all semiautomatic rifles and shotguns, as well as a number of handguns, that law-abiding citizens commonly own and use for self-defense, competition, and recreation. Current owners would be forced to register them with DPS by January 1, 2025, to maintain possession. Restricts standard capacity magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds. Attempts to supersede federal law by prohibiting certain NFA items outright.

Plan to attend Wednesday's hearing at 1:30pm in Room 309 of the State Capitol in Santa Fe and testify in-person or virtually to OPPOSE House 127 and House Bill 137.
