New Mexico: Governor Announces Push for Heinrich-Style Gun Ban in January

Interim Legislative Committee Endorses Gun Control for 2024 Session

Dear New Mexico Gun Owner:

While most of their constituents are busy preparing for the holiday season, Governor Gun Grab and progressive anti-gun lawmakers in Santa Fe have been hard at work on their gun control agenda for the New Year.

This week, Lujan Grisham announced her intention to push a state-version of U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich's unconstitutional GOSAFE gun and magazine ban during the upcoming legislative session that starts on January 16th. Also, the joint interim Courts, Corrections & Justice Committee endorsed a 14-day waiting period on all firearms purchases and a ban on carrying firearms within 100 feet of any polling place or ballot dropbox, giving both proposals momentum going into the 2024 session before any regular committee meetings are held where public testimony is actually taken on these issues.

Instead of getting serious about the out-of-control crime problem that plagues Albuquerque and other parts of the state, this governor engages in publicity stunts like her never-ending public health emergency gun carry prohibition and her embrace of a new gun and magazine ban with a clever acronym. Rather than debating policies that target violent offenders and reform the state's revolving-door criminal justice system, state lawmakers are discussing extreme proposals to restrict your Second Amendment right to purchase, own, and carry firearms.

Prefiling of legislation for the 30-day session in 2024 begins on January 2nd. The Legislature convenes on January 16th. Your NRA-ILA will be at the Roundhouse fighting to protect your rights, but gun owners will also need to be fully-engaged in the battle against the governor and radical progressive lawmakers' anti-gun agenda.

For NOW, here's what you can do to protect the Second Amendment in the Land of Enchantment:

  1. Forward at least FIVE family members, friends, and fellow gun owners this alert and urge them to sign up at www.nrailafrontlines.com to receive FREE email and text notifications from NRA-ILA on gun control legislation that will be debated during the 2024 legislative session. Help us get the word out to gun owners and Second Amendment supporters who are NOT currently receiving this critical information!
  2. Become a Frontlines Activist Leader (FAL) who NRA-ILA can call on to testify before legislative committees against gun control bills, in-person at the Roundhouse or remotely via zoom, when they are scheduled for public hearings. FALs may also be asked to submit letters to the editor or opinion pieces to their local news publications and to distribute legislative information at gun shows, competitive shoots, or similar events. Please email NRA-ILA Grassroots Field Coordinator Clay Kimberling ([email protected]) for more information on signing up to be an FAL.
  3. Contact your State Senators and State Representatives TODAY and urge them to OPPOSE bans on commonly-owned semi-automatic firearms, limits on magazine capacity, waiting periods on firearms purchases, and expansion of gun-free zones around poll locations.
