Oregon's Anti-Gun Populace is Coming for your Guns, Again!

Oregon's Anti-Gun Populace is Coming for your Guns, Again!

Citizen petitioners have filed, and now begun to gather signatures, to take away your gun rights on the 2022 ballot:

Initiative Petition (IP) 17 seeks to:

  • Require you to obtain a permit to acquire a firearm
  • Create a firearm and permit database of your personal information maintained by state police
  • Ban ammunition magazines over 10 rounds

Initiative Petition (IP) 18 seeks to:

  • Ban semi-automatic firearms (includes more than 100 models of handguns, rifles, and shotguns & 10 generalized categories of semi-automatic firearms)

Despite recent data showing that guns being used in Portland's rising crime rates are coming from 3 sources - stolen, straw purchases, and the underground market (all already illegal means) - these anti-gun citizens are coming after YOU, the law-abiding firearm owners of Oregon, and YOUR guns. They don't care about the Constitution, your right to keep and bear arms, or your God-given right of self-defense. The NRA will stand with you to fight these blatant infringements on the Second Amendment!

Anti-gun petitioners are gathering signatures - DO NOT SIGN INITIATIVE PETITION 17 or 18!

Oregon's initiative process allows citizens to propose laws, or amendments to the state Constitution. Initiative petitioners must gather and submit a required number of signatures and, if reached, the initiative is placed on the ballot for voters to adopt or reject.

The NRA submitted comments opposing IP 17 and IP 18 to the Secretary of State and Oregon Attorney General. Recently, the Oregon Supreme Court denied the Oregon Firearms Federation's court challenge to IP 17 and IP 18's misleading ballot titles and summaries. This denial allows the initiative petitioners to begin collecting signatures in order to qualify the initiatives for consideration on the 2022 ballot. Petitioners must now gather 112,020 signatures for IP 17 and IP 18 to reach the ballot in 2022. They have not yet qualified for the ballot in 2022.

Additional information on the anti-gun initiative petitions:

IP 17 would require you to obtain a permit from local law enforcement in order to acquire a firearm. This permit would require you to complete an approved "safety" program. You must pay for this permit, and its only valid for 5 years. You may have to wait up to 30 days for this permit to be issued. IP 17 would also create a state police database of firearms and firearms permits. These permit requirements are in addition to current background check requirements. IP 17 also seeks to ban ammunition magazines over 10 rounds.

IP 18 would prohibit the manufacturing, possession and transfer of listed semiautomatic firearms. Any currently owned firearms on the list must be registered or surrendered to police. Firearm dealers must remove the listed firearms from the state, or dispose of them. Commonly owned rifles, handguns and shotguns are included on the list, found here

Please, do NOT sign either petition and encourage your friends and family to refrain from signing the petitions as well.  The NRA will continue to monitor the status of signature gathering and keep our members updated.
