Alabama: Committee Vote Scheduled for Lifetime Carry Permit Legislation

Contact Members of the Public Safety Committee Today to Support HB 595

Yesterday, Wednesday, May 15 the Alabama House Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee held a public hearing on House Bill 595, sponsored by Representative Proncey Robertson (R-7), with a vote scheduled for next week, possibly Tuesday or Wednesday.

Time is running out on this year’s legislative session and it is important that you use the TAKE ACTION button below to contact the Members of the Committee and respectfully ask them to vote in favor of the lifetime permit bill -- HB 595 – when it is next brought before the Committee!

HB 595 would create a new lifetime carry permit issued by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) to state residents.   Unfortunately, opponents of the bill are using false and misleading arguments to derail this important legislation.  Your legislator needs to hear from you, as a law-abiding citizen who supports HB 595 and wants a lifetime permit!

The process for a lifetime permit under HB 595 is simple and straightforward.  After requesting a background check from their local sheriff, an individual can apply to any ALEA office where driver’s licenses are issued, pay a one-time fee of $150, and after submitting a completed application and favorable background report, have a permit for life.

The lifetime permit law will follow existing statute in all material respects, but will provide additional options not currently available to permit holders.  HB 595 gives individuals the choice of having a lifetime permit endorsement placed on their driver’s license or state identification card, or they can choose to have a separate card issued by ALEA.  The permit cost will be split between the local sheriff’s conducting the background check and ALEA to handle the administration of the new permit process.

This is an important change to the existing permitting system that will give law-abiding gun owners the option of deciding which route is best suited for their individual self-defense needs.  Don’t let anyone take this important choice from you – make sure you use the TAKE ACTION button above to contact the Members of the Committee TODAY and let them know that you want the option of a lifetime permit!
