Police say a homeowner shoots a suspected burglar at 199 Pine Street early this morning. Around 3:30 AM, detectives say the homeowner told them he’d confronted Jorge Ortiz, 26, after hearing a banging on his front door. The homeowner said he shot Ortiz after Ortiz kicked in his front door and entered his home. Police said a neighbor called 911 to get first responders to the scene. “Whenever you break in someone’s house in Jamaica we shoot them. So that’s a good thing the guy did,” said neighbor Wilden Bunting. “When I get my pay and I get my stuff. I don’t want you to come and steal it ’cause I’m going to shoot you too if I see you. Be honest, that’s the way of life.” When Police arrived on scene, 26-year-old Jorge Ortiz was laying on the ground suffering a gun shot wound to the shoulder. He was then transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital for further treatment of a non-life threatening wound. Hospital officials say Ortiz is listed in stable condition. “I’m completely overwhelmed and out of my mind right now,” said neighbor Vanessa Adams. “I keep my phone on me all the time just so I could call 911 and keep the doors locked and windows closed.” Police say the homeowner is being interviewed by investigators. So far no charges have been filed in the case. At this point, it’s unclear if Ortiz was shot inside or outside of the home. We asked New Haven police for an on-camera interview and they declined.
