Alaska: Self-Defense Legislation Passes First House Committee, Second Scheduled For Tomorrow

Today, Senate Bill 174 passed the House Education Committee and is scheduled to be considered by the House Judiciary Committee Tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.  Please contact members of the House Judiciary Committee and politely urge them to SUPPORT Senate Bill 174 with no amendments when it comes up for a vote. 

SB 174 would allow students, faculty and guests to own, possess, carry, transport or store a firearm on areas of the University of Alaska campus where not prohibited by law.  This legislation would limit the Board of Regent’s ability to regulate the possession and carry of firearms on campuses at the University of Alaska.  A state-funded institution should not be allowed to impose rules more strict than state law, especially rules to limit one’s right to self-defense.  Individuals should not be prevented from exercising their right to self-defense simply because they choose to seek a college education.
