On Monday, April 11, the House Education Committee is scheduled to hear Senate Bill 174 at 8:00 a.m. SB 174 has also been referred to the House Judiciary Committee and has been scheduled for a hearing on Tuesday, April 12 at 1:00 p.m. It is important that you contact committee members and politely urge them to SUPPORT Senate Bill 174 when it comes up for a vote.
SB 174 would allow students, faculty and guests to own, possess, carry, transport or store a firearm on areas of the University of Alaska campus where not prohibited by law. This legislation would limit the Board of Regent’s ability to regulate the possession and carry of firearms on campuses at the University of Alaska. A state-funded institution should not be allowed to impose rules more strict than state law, especially rules to limit one’s right to self-defense. Individuals should not be prevented from exercising their right to self-defense simply because they choose to seek a college education.
We urge you to go to your local Legislative Information Office (LIO) during the hearings and voice your support for SB 174. Additionally, please click the “Take Action” button above to contact your state Representative, as well as members of the House Education Committee and House Judiciary Committee, and politely urge them to support SB 174.
