Yesterday, Governor Chris Christie (R) conditionally vetoed Assembly Bill 4218. A.4218 passed the Assembly with a 48-11 vote, and the Senate with a 29-1 vote. In his veto message, Governor Christie cited the bill’s redundancy with existing law and proposed increasing penalties for violent offenders.
As previously reported, A.4218, sponsored by Assemblywoman Gabriela Mosquera, sought to expand a “prohibited” class under the guise of domestic violence. However, this bill ignored legitimate due process concerns and would do nothing to ensure a critical rights restoration process. While this legislation was amended, it was still fraught with problems that could have potentially ensnared law-abiding gun owners as repeatedly witnessed in New Jersey.
This bill is unnecessary, lacks adequate due process and is laced with pitfalls for law-abiding citizens. If lawmakers are serious about getting tough on domestic violence, they should focus on legislation which enhance penalties for convicted violent offenders.
