Legislative Debate on Nebraska’s Constitutional Right to Hunt and Fish Amendment to be Continued this Tuesday, April 5!

Friday, April 1, 2011

Nebraska Right to Hunt and Fish legislation, LR 40CA, has been scheduled for continued debate on the Senate floor this Tuesday, April 5 at 10 a.m. State Senator Pete Pirsch’s (4) amendment to LR 40CA to be considered would provide truly meaningful protections against anti-hunting activists who seek to ban all hunting in America, enshrining hunting and fishing in Nebraska’s Constitution.

Adoption of the Pirsch amendment would preserve Nebraska’s rich hunting and fishing traditions for future generations. It would also ensure that Nebraska’s wildlife continues to flourish because sportsmen have driven conservation for more than a century.

The Pirsch amendment would guarantee that these rights are subject only to laws, rules and regulations that promote “wildlife conservation and management and that preserve the future of hunting and fishing.” Specifically, it prohibits regulations that would ban the use of “traditional methods” such as bow hunting or the sustainable taking of wildlife such as deer, elk and doves. The Pirsch amendment would protect the citizens’ hunting heritage from attacks initiated by well-funded anti-hunting extremists who have assailed sportsmen throughout the country in recent years. In addition, it specifies that hunting, fishing and harvesting of wildlife shall be used as a preferred means of managing and controlling wildlife. This ensures that sportsmen will continue to be used as the state’s responsible game managers instead of the taxpayer-funded sharpshooters and unproven, expensive wildlife contraception schemes employed in other jurisdictions.

The time is NOW to protect Nebraska’s proud hunting and fishing heritage for generations to come. Nebraska cannot wait for a crisis to occur or until the anti-hunting forces gain more power.

If you haven’t already, please contact your state Senator today, and urge him or her to support the Pirsch amendment to LR 40CA. In addition, please respectfully ask him or her to oppose any other amendment(s) and only vote for the Pirsch amendment because it is ideally written to fully protect sportsmen in Nebraska.
