Virginia: Two NRA-Supported Bills to be Heard in Committee Tomorrow, February 23!

Monday, February 22, 2010

On Tuesday, February 23, at 2 p.m. in Senate Room B the Senate Local Government Committee will hold a hearing on two NRA supported bills, House Bill 108 and House Bill 109 both sponsored by Delegate Mark Cole (R-88).

House Bill 108 would prohibit agents of localities or localities themselves from participating in “gun buy-backs” unless the governing body of such a locality authorizes such a program. The locality would then have the option of selling the firearms by auction to a federally licensed dealer (FFL) or disposing of the firearm.

During the 2009 session, Delegate Cole introduced identical legislation, HB2528, which was passed by both the House and Senate chambers and vetoed by former Governor Tim Kaine (D).

House Bill 109 would repeal § 15.2-1207 of the Code of Virginia , which allows the governing body of any county to require the sellers of pistols and revolvers to furnish the Clerk of the Circuit Court with the name and address of the purchaser, date of purchase and the serial number, make, and caliber of the firearm.

§ 15.2-1207 is an archaic statute that serves no purpose other than to give anti-gun politicians and local bureaucrats a means in which to create a de facto firearm registry of honest and law-abiding Virginians.

Please contact the members of the Senate Local Government Committee listed below and respectfully urge them to support HB 108 and HB 109.
