The Cherokee Scout, Cherokee County, N.C. 10/21/08

A deer viciously attacked an 86 year-old man near his home in Andrews, N.C. As the attack was occurring his daughter ran from the house to protect him. The daughter grabbed onto the deer’s antlers to save her father, directing the animal’s attention to herself. The daughter held onto the deer for upwards of 10 minutes while yelling to her mother to call her husband for help. Upon learning of the situation the husband grabbed his pistol and headed for the scene. When he arrived the husband fired a shot into the rear of the animal. But the animal was undeterred and the husband was forced to fire again, at which point the deer charged him. He fired one more time, and the animal was finally put down. The daughter received severe bruising from the attack as well as a cut that required stitches. Her father had to be taken to the hospital by helicopter and underwent treatment, including brain surgery, but is recovering.
