APPEARS IN Second Amendment

Anti-Gunners Use Specter Of Defeat To Rally Supporters

Friday, June 13, 2008

While no one knows exactly how the Supreme Court will rule on the Heller case this month, one thing is certain-the Court’s ruling will not mark the end of our battle, but rather, a new beginning.

In predicting defeat for his side in the Heller case, Brady Center President Paul Helmke turned his lament into a clarion call for increased legislative and political activism among those who wish to erode the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding American citizens.

“We’ve lost the battle on what the Second Amendment means.  Seventy-five percent of the public thinks it’s an individual right.  Why are we arguing a theory anymore?  We are concerned about what we can do practically.  We’re expecting D.C. to lose the case,” Helmke said. “But this could be good from the standpoint of the political-legislative side.”

Again, it is premature to guess how the Court will rule.  However, our opponents’ strategy is now crystal clear:  Open up a new front in the legislative and political battlefields to reverse a possible Supreme Court ruling affirming the Second Amendment as an individual right.

We must match and surpass the Brady Center’s new commitment to grassroots activism, and we are counting on you to lead the charge!  In the coming weeks and months, we will provide you with additional tasks you can undertake to help us elect pro-Second Amendment lawmakers to office this November, who in turn, will work to legislate on behalf of our freedoms.

In the meantime, please make sure you are currently registered to vote.  For information on voter registration, including voter registration applications, click here.  Also, please make sure you are plugged in with your local NRA-ILA Election Volunteer Coordinator (EVC) and his or her grassroots efforts to provide campaign volunteers to candidates who support our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.  To identify and contact your EVC, click here.

We have proven time and again, that NO ONE can match the level of intensity and grassroots activism of NRA members and gun owners-especially during election season.  With our opponents now feverishly working to become more engaged in the political arena, we must once again step up and show them we will fight to protect the Constitution.
