Proposal 3, which would authorize the state Natural Resources Commission to establish a hunting season for mourning doves, is an emotional issue for those Michiganians who treasure the cooing birds at their backyard feeders. Opponents of Proposal 3 point to the fact that the birds have been protected in Michigan for more than a century. But we have to agree with proponents of Proposal 3, who say there is no sound biological or scientific reason for protecting the doves.
