Sen. George V. Voinovich (R-Ohio) became the 53rd member of the Senate to co-sponsor the bill that would provide the nation`s gun manufacturers with broad protection from lawsuits. Voinovich`s decision provides backers of the bill with crucial support. Because Democratic opponents -- led by Dianne Feinstein of California--have threatened a filibuster, supporters of the measure will need 60 votes to end the delaying tactics and pass the bill.
