State wildlife officials will decide Friday whether a hunt is needed to control New Jersey`s growing black bear population. An estimated 2,500 bears live in the Garden State, mostly in the northern and western corners, and some officials and residents fear that the animals will cause major problems unless something is done soon to lower their numbers.
